Avalanche Skills Training Courses.
The Shred Collective is excited to offer avalanche safety training this coming winter.
What: We will be delivering Avalanche Canada’s “Avalanche Skills Training 1” (AST) courses. This is a two day courses offered partially online and partially in the field. The course will be broken down into three portions:
E-Learning module. This online learning module replaces a traditional classroom environment and will let students complete this portion of the course on their own schedule. Students will be provided with a login for the curriculum and can complete the 3-4 hour course at their own pace prior to our field day. This will cover the basic theory of how avalanches are formed, explain forecasting tools and give the basic knowledge to plan a trip beyond the ski area boundaries.
Pre trip planning session- This is a 2 hour session done the evening before the field day that will review the e learning module and plan our field day. We will go through avalanche and weather forecasts, terrain selection and what to pack and expect for a field day. This will be done via a zoom call.
Field Day: The field day will be hosted either out of Sunshine Village, Banff or Burstall Pass, Kananaskis Country and will be a full day on snow. We will cover the basics of how to use avalanche rescue gear, practice rescue scenarios, do some basic snowpack analysis and discuss travel techniques for avalanche terrain.
The cost of the course is $280+GST and includes all printed material, access to the e learning module and a guide throughout the process. You will need to bring a shovel, beacon and modern 3 antenna avalanche beacon and method to travel over snow (Splitboard, touring skis or snowshoes.)
